Chrono Cross was released as a direct sequel to the massively popular Chronotrigger. However, it is its own unique role-playing title with 40+ characters, a branching tale, and multiple endings. In the same vein as its predecessor, this game is also about crossing between time and making things right. This story centers on Serge's journey to find the Frozen Flare, which will grant the beholder with the power of space and time. Serge wants the Frozen Flame so he can save himself from death in a paralel universe. But, as you may have guessed, there are other forces that want it for their own ends. Chronocross features SquareSoft’s usual stylish characters and stunning cutscenes, but also a host of new gameplay elements. While the battle system is essentially turn based, characters are not required to wait until their turn to make an attack or cast a magic spell. Battles are controlled by stamina. All monsters appear on screen, so you can avoid repetitive battles.
